How my gouache paintings came to life as printable art
Decorating your home should feel personal and accessible. That’s why I turned my gouache art into printable wall art - to make it easy for you to have a piece of dreamy, painterly, cozy vibes in you home, no matter where you are.
In this post I’ll take you behind the scenes of my creative process, from an idea, to sketchbook exploration, color palette selection, to a finished digital file ready to download and print.
01: Finding Inspiration
Each piece start with inspiration often from nature, food, movies, books, Pinterest, or my own notes sketchbook.
For example my recent inspect collection was inspired by insects on Pinterest and the painted border patterns in the book “Patterns of India”
02: Notes sketchbook
Before each piece is painted I’ll sketch out ideas and compositions in my notes sketchbook. This book gives me a sfae place to explore iterate, and solve composition issues. Each idea doesn’t get used, but keeping all my ideas in one space makes it easy to have a starting point for new projects, or those ideas will be recycled and used in the future.
03: Exploring color palettes
Before painting the final piece I’ll make mini paitings in a large watercolor book. The goal is to finalize the color palettes and test the compositions from the previous step. I also use this time to try out different gouache techniques such as dry brush, or blending wet into wet paint.
04: Painting the design
Now we get to the fun part. Painting! I prefer to paint with gouache because I love its vibrancy and opaque finish. Each piece is painted by hand layer by layer until the artwork feels complete.
05: Digitizeing the artwork
After the painting is finished I scan it at a high resolution to preserve all the details and texture. Next I refine the artwork by removing the original white watercolor paper background, clean up mistakes, remove dust or debris, and adjust color for accuracy. When that’s done I’ll add a new white watercolor paper background to keep the textural look of watercolor paper on the art prints.
06: Creating a printable file
Finally I prepare a variety of file sizes and ratios so you can print in formats like US letter size 8.5x11 IN., 8x10, 11x14, or larger. Each print size is saved as a high quality JPEG file. Including multiple size options gives you the flexibility to print the size you need for your space.
Whether you want a statement pice for your home office, or a smaller print for your nursery room I make sure each file is crisp and ready for printing.
Whether you’re looking to refresh your space, add to the vibes of your cozy home, or add a personal touch to your walls, my illustrated printable gouache art is here to help you make it happen.
